The Statue of Unity is the greatest statue of Indian statesman activist Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950) located in the state of Gujarat, India. Statue of Unity is the tallest Statue in the whole world. Statue of unity's height is 182 meters (597 ft). Statue of Unity is exactly located on a river island facing the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the river Narmada in Kevadiya colony, 100 kilometers Southeast of the city of Vadodara, Gujarat.

The Statue of Unity project was first announced in 2010 and the construction of the Statue of Unity started in October 2014. Statue of Unity made by Larsen & Toubro Limited (leading construction company in India) company gets the contract of Statue of Unity for 2989 crore ($420 million USD). Statue of Unity was designed by great Indian sculptor Ms. Ram V. Sutar. statue of Unity inaugurated by Indian prime minister Narendra Modi on 31 October 2018, the 143rd anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birth.

  • Indian prime minister Shri Narendra Modi announced the Statue of Unity project to tribute Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on 7 October 2010 at a press conference to mark the beginning of his 10th year as Gujarat's chief minister. At the time, the Statue of Unity project was a tribute to the nation from Gujarat. A special purpose vehicle named the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVPRET) was constituted by the Government of Gujarat for executing the Statue of Unity project.
  • To support the construction of the statue, an outreach drive called the statue of unity was started. By asking the farmers to cultivate their farming and donate there used iron instruments, it helped to collect the required iron for the idol. By 2016, a total of 135 metric tons of scarp iron was collected and after processing, it used about 109 tons to make the foundation of the Statue of Unity.
  • In support of the project, the Statue of Unity was organized on 15 December 2013 in Surat Gujarat.

  • The statue is shown Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the most prominent of the Indian independence movement, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is the first Deputy prime minister of India, and responsible for the unification of hundreds of states to form the modern political boundary of India.
  • After studying much sculpture of Sardar Patel across the whole country, a team of historians, artist, sculptor, and academics choose to proceed statue of unity with a great design created by the great Indian sculptor, Ms. Ram V. Sutra. The statue of unity is a much larger copy of a statue of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel installed at Ahmedabad International Airport.
  • In a conversation on the statue of Unity's design, Ram V. Sutra's son, Anil sutra explain about the design of statue of unity that ''the posture, pose and expression and justify the confidence, dignity, iron as well as kindness that his persona exudes. The head is up with proud. a shawl flung from shoulders and hands are on the side like Sardar Patel is ready to walk". three models of the same design as the statue of unity measuring.

were initially created. When the design of the world's largest statue ( statue of unity) was approved, a detailed 3D-Scan was produced which formed the basic for the bronze cladding cast in a foundry in China.

  • Sardar Patel's Dhoti covered the legs and shoes provided the design thinner at the base than at the top, which affected its stability. It was addressed by maintaining a structured ratio of 16:19 instead of the traditional ratio 8:14 of other high-rise buildings. The statue of unity is built to bear winds up to 220 kilometers per hour (140 meters per hour) and earthquakes measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale which is at a depth of 10 km and within a radius of 12 km of the statue of unity. it receives 250 tones of tuned mas dumped, which ensure maximum stability to world's largest statue (the statue of unity).
  • The total height of this structure from its base is 240 m (790 ft.), with a base of 58 meters (190 ft) and the height of statue of unity is 182 meters ( 597 ft ). on both of them, the height of the structure become 240 meters. The height of 182 m was specifically chosen to match the number of seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly.

  • The construction of the statue of unity starts in 2013. A union with turner constructions, Michale Graves and associate and Manhart Group monitored the project. it took 56 months to complete - 15 months for the plan, 40 months for the construction and two months to hand over the constructions. the total cost of the project was estimated by the government to be 6.66 billion. tender bids for the first phase were invited in October 2013 and closed in November 2013.
  • Narendra Modi, who served as Chief Minister of Gujarat, laid the foundation of the statue of unity on October 13, 2013, on the 138th anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birthday.
  • Indian infrastructure Company Larsen & Toubro won the contract for the lowest bid of ₹ 29.89 billion for manufacture, design, and maintenance on October 27' 2014.

  • From Larsen & Toubro more than 3,000 workers and 250 engineers were employed in the construction of the statue of unity. At the origin of the statue, 210,000 cubic meters (7,400,000 cubic feet) of concrete, cement, 18,500 ton reinforced steel, and 6500 ton of structural steel were used.
  • Construction of the monument was completed in mid-October 2018; The inauguration ceremony was held on October 31, 2018, which was headed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.statue of unity has been described as a tribute to Indian engineering skills and creativity.

Funding -

  • The statue of unity built on a public-private partnership, most of the money raised by Gujarat's government. The Gujarat stats government had allotted inr 6 billion (USD$28 MILLION) for the budget from 2012 to 2015. In the 2014-2015 Union budget, inr 2 billion were allocated for the construction of the statue of unity.

Issues and criticism -


  • Environmental activists wrote a letter to the central government that the project implementation started without approval from the Ministry of Environment. People of Kevadia, Kothi, Waghodiya, Limbdi, Navagam, and Gora opposed the construction of the statue and redistributed 375 hectares of land (927 acres) for the dam as well as land rights for the new formation.
  • Protest against land acquisition for tourism infrastructure development around the statue of unity. They have been offered cash and land compensation, and they have been provided jobs.
  • When the budget for 2014-15 was allocated to the statue of unity in the central budget of `200 crores, many people and political parties criticized the expenditure on statue of unity on other priorities like women's safety, education and agricultural schemes Of  Larsen & Toubro is contracted with TQ Art Foundry - subsidiary of Jiangxi Token Company, which is located in Nanchang, China - for the bronze cladding of the statue, whose critique is Indian The National Congress, by the opposition party in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Larsen & Toubro later clarified that 9% of the project's total value was derived from China.

  • The monument is built on the river facing 3.2 km facing the river Narmada Dam upstream. The statue of unity occupies more than 2 hectares around the statue and surrounded by a 12 km artificial lake formed by Gurdeshwar weir Downstream on the river Narmada.
  • Statue of Unity is the tallest statue in the whole world at the height of 182 meters. It is 54 meters taller than the previous record holder of spring temple  Buddha in Henan province of China. Within India, before the statue of unity, the tallest statue in India was a 41 meters God hanuman's statue located in parietal Anjaneya temple near Vijayawada, in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Statue of unity can be seen within 7 km distance.
  • In zone 1, the museum lists the life of Sardar Patel and his contribution. An adjacent audiovisual gallery provides a 15-minute presentation on the Patel Patel and describes the tribal culture of the state as well. The concrete towers that make up the feet of the statue have two elevators. In each lift, more than 30 seconds, the gallery that can be seen in 26 people can be taken. The gallery is located at an altitude of 153 meters and can reach 200 people at a time.
  • The statue of unity is divided into five zones, of which only three are accessible to the public. From its base, Patel is the first area to the level of Shins which has three levels and includes an exhibition area, mezzanine, and terrace. Zone 1 has a memorial park and a museum. The second area reaches Patel's thighs up to 149 meters, while the third is spread to the gallery watching at 153 meters. Zone 4 is the maintenance area whereas the last area includes the statue's head and shoulders. The top area of the statue is only for some special people not for everyone.

According to an officer of a senior Sardar Sarovar Narmada Corporation Limited (SSNL), the Gujarat government initially appointed an American advisor who commissioned Sculptor Joseph Menna to create a digital proof-of-the-concept model before unity. However, once he realized that the model of Menna was an adaptation of Patel's Ram Sutar statue at Ahmedabad Airport, the government had instructed Larsen & Toubro to take advantage of the services of the carpenters.
